Rising to the net zero challenge: how to procure for retrofit
Last week our colleagues at the Northern Housing Consortium launched a new annual report, the Northern Housing Monitor.
Focusing on the particular challenges of housing in the north, chapters include energy efficiency, affordability, ‘levelling up’ and the role of the private rented sector.
Written by consultancy Ark4 and supported by WardHathaway, the Monitor provides a detailed overview of the housing market in the north of England. It will also include an interactive geographic lookup tool, enabling NHC members to drill down into the data to access even more granular insight.
I’ll be taking a closer look at some of the findings from this report in my presentation at the Chartered Institute of Housing’s annual conference and exhibition – and asking the question, how can housing providers in the north get ready for net zero?
As we’re all aware, the government’s Clean Growth Strategy has set a target for all social homes to meet an EPC rating of Band C or higher by 2035. This is even earlier for fuel poor households where the target date is 2030.
It’s clear that we all know what we need to do. The question is, how? How do housing providers meet these targets, both in terms of finding enough contractors with the right skills and experience to carry out this critical work, and with the clock ticking, how do you get started quickly and where should you best spend your limited budgets?
